Cueva del Hierro is a delight in summer – very cool – but in winter it gets very cold. Hence the importance of having heating.
After giving it some thought, we decided to build the boiler room. I worked as a bricklayer’s assistant.
My main task was to mix the cement using the mixer that our neighbour Pablo had lent us.
The bags of cement weigh 25 kilos, but at that time I was fit and strong, and with all those bags of cement, I became even stronger.
Here is a photo gallery of the construction process for the little boiler room.
Once the little room was finished, we installed an eco-friendly Austrian wood-fired boiler, connected to a 1,000-litre buffer tank located in a second room. And on top of that second room, we installed a solar thermal panel so that we have hot water all year round thanks to the sun…
When the heating system is switched on, hot water flows from the buffer tank into the house and heats the eighteen radiators we installed inside.
This video shows the boiler room; the buffer tank room; and the solar thermal panel.
And we also made our own firewood for many years. I even bought a little trailer!
Bye!
