In 1983, I left Salamanca to go and live in Alicante. At my school in Alicante, we had an absolutely wonderful craft teacher, Adelina Roselló, and that was when I fell in love with crafts. With her and thanks to her.
Adelina, as well as teaching us crafts, was my form tutor in the seventh year of E.G.B. (Basic General Education), which is now equivalent in Spain to the first year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education).
Of all the wonderful things we made with her, the only things we still have are the two trivets or placemats for hot pots made from jute twine that I’ve shown below… And I say we still have because it’s actually my mum and dad who’ve kept them at their house… They’ve been using these placemats for over forty years… and they still do the job!
And, whilst chatting to Adelina, she reminded me of a lovely story. She still remembers a day when it rained quite heavily and, straight afterwards, the sun came out and a magnificent rainbow formed in the sky… and I was really surprised and told her it was the first time I’d ever seen a rainbow…
I’d completely forgotten about that story! And to think that, as an adult, I’ve had a real passion for rainbows! There’s no accounting for taste!
